Since 1st October 2004 retailers have been required by law to make "reasonable adjustments" to the "physical features of their premises" so that disabled people are not discriminated against. The Act takes a broad view of the term "disabled" and it should not therefore be assumed that this covers wheelchair users only. It includes, amongst others, people with sensory impairments such as the hard of hearing and people with learning difficulties.

How do you know what is considered "reasonable" in law for your business? The Disability Rights Commission recommends conducting an Access Audit to identify where the barriers lie.

Recognising the difficulties for members in choosing a reputable access auditor and the associated costs, bssa has negotiated a comprehensive package of DDA related services at preferential rates.

The SMART audit, supplied by Configure, brings a radical new approach to access auditing which, in addition to saving time and resources, delivers information in a 'living document' which means that it is continuously updated.

In addition to this service, bssa has also teamed up with Configure to offer members training in how to access audit their premises and train their staff in the requirements of the Act.
