New fire safety rules affecting all non-domestic premises in England and Wales will come into force on 1st October 2006. We have, therefore, tailored a service for members to assist with the compliance process so please read on for further details.

What are the changes?

The law will emphasise preventing fires and reducing risk.
It will be your responsibility to ensure the safety of everyone who uses your premises and in the immediate vicinity.
Fire certificates will be abolished.

Will this affect me?

Yes, if you are:

responsible for business premises.
an employer.
self-employed with business premises.
a charity or voluntary organisation.
a contractor with a degree of control over premises.

1st October 2006 is a key date –the new law comes into effect and you must comply.

What will I have to do?

You must carry out a fire risk assessment in your premises. The aim is to help you keep people and your premises, safe from fire.

Enforcing authorities (usually fire authorities) will be inspecting your premises to make sure you comply.

How do I do this?

We can help as we have set up preferential arrangements with Chubb’s Fire Assessment service which will entitle members to a 20% discount off standard rates, details of which are set out below. In addition, the Department for Communities and Local Government have produced a series of guides for different business sectors. These guides will give you more information about how to carry out a Fire Risk assessment, with advice for your type of business. One specifically relates to Offices and Shops. The Chubb Fire Service for bssa members

Our new arrangement with Chubb Fire provides members with access to the following services:

An online Risk Assessment which is ideal for smaller sites where there is adequate capability in-house to conduct a fire assessment although internet access is required.
A Consultancy Service which is designed for those companies who may not have anyone competent to carry out the assessment or feel the task warrants an expert opinion to ensure compliance. Chubb Fire use ex Fire Service personnel with a wealth of experience in this field.

Both of these services will attract a discount of 20% which is exclusive to bssa members.

Extinguisher Annual Maintenance Service

Members also have access to our extinguisher annual maintenance service with Chubb together with a range of associated equipment at preferential rates.

Effective fire safety depends on having the right fire fighting equipment kept in the right place and having the knowledge to use it correctly. It is essential to recognise the different types of fire, as the correct treatment for one can prove disastrously wrong for another.

They also offer a nationwide service from which all bssa members can benefit.

Chubb can provide a complete range of portable extinguishers - including water, foam, dry powder and CO2, as well as hose reels, fire blankets and other useful equipment.

As well as being BSI approved Chubb is BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment) registered for the contract maintenance of extinguishers. Service representatives are qualified to maintain all makes of fire extinguishers and will advise on any new equipment needed and the correct positioning of that equipment.
